Do You Fall into #MalnutritionTraps?

For more than 20 years now, Philippines has been facing the rise on the number of underweight and overweight Filipino. The World Health Organization (WHO) defined this phenomenon as the “Double Burden of Malnutrition” or the “prevalence of both under nutrition and overweight in the same community, nation, or region.”

To address this problem, the government launched the Pinggang Pinoy® campaign in 2014. But, what really is this campaign all about? Pinggang Pinoy® is an easy-to-understand food guide showing proper food group portioning on a per-meal basis which reflects the principles of MOderation, VAriety and BAlance (MOVABA) to promote healthier eating habits.

Acknowledging the fact that solving the Philippines’ Double Burden of Malnutrition is not an easy feat, Ajinomoto Philippines Corporation recognizes the need for a collaborative effort between the public and private sectors. With this, Ajinomoto partnered with government agencies to conduct education programs to raise awareness and promote the practice of Pinggang Pinoy® in malnutrition hotspots, where incidences of Double Burden Malnutrition are high. Trainings were given to homemakers/mothers who have malnourished (underweight, stunting, wasting, overweight and obese) school-aged children.

The pilot run resulted to improvements of the knowledge & attitudes of households related to the practice of Pinggang Pinoy® within target areas. However, behavior changes towards healthier eating habits remains to be a challenge. The program uncovered a number #MalnutritionTraps that some Pinoy households easily fall into. The following #MalnutritionTraps provide a picture of how unhealthy eating habits may lead to Double Burden of Malnutrition:

 1. Overconsumption of carbohydrates: Voracious rice eaters can easily fill half of their plates with rice. Others have pandesal & noodles as regular meal deprived of other nutrients derived from a well-balanced meal.

 2. Under consumption of vegetables and/fruits: It is common for some to be content with rice & meat to satisfy their hunger and skip/take insufficient amount of vegetables/fruits. Fact is, the variety of colors found in Glow foods are important sources of vitamins & minerals to sustain our energy & keep us from getting sick.

3. Overconsumption of protein: Typical Filipino “SILOG” meals include double serving of proteins (e.g. Tapa+Itlog, Tocino+Itlog, Longanisa+Itlog, Bangus+Itlog). Eating different kinds of protein is fine for as long as they are taken in moderation. We must also avoid protein dishes served high in fat, cholesterol and sodium.

Monty Python’s Spamalot: Back By Popular Re-Quest ( A Press Night & More!)

Stage plays will always have a special place in my heart.

I'll let you in on a little secret. Back in college, I was once a part of a theater guild myself. I was part of Artistang Artlets - the theater guild of UST's College of Arts & Letters! And although I didn't really acted much on the stage since I am almost always part of the production design (I am always behind the stage!), I will always have very high regard to stage actors since I have witness the hardship and the discipline that is expected of all the theater actors.

And with the popularity of different entertainment and social media platforms, stage plays have somehow lost the spotlight. I am just glad that there are still people in this industry who remained positive and continued to produce quality plays to encourage its target markets to try and experience the magic and the entertainment that theater plays provide its audience.

Upstart Productions, Inc.

Upstart Productions, Inc. is one of the companies who remained steadfast in producing quality plays in our country. Composing of artists who are very much dedicated in coming up with original, creative and engaging material, Upstart Productions, Inc. once again brought back the world's most infamous comedy musicals - Monty Phyton's SPAMALOT to the Philippine stage!

Monty Phyton's Spamalot Press Night

Last Thursday, April 12, 2018, I was so happy to be invited to the Press Night of Monty Phyton's Spamalot. Held at the Globe Auditorium, Maybank Performing Arts Theater, BGC Arts Center, the event was graced by some celebrities,  representatives from different media platforms and some VIPs.

A scene from Monty Phyton's Spamalot

And true to ABS-CBN New's commentary last year, we were all once again treated to " a rollicking good time" as we all can't stop giggling and laughing all throughout the show! I really love how alive and energetic each character appeared on the stage. I never really imagined Ms. Carla Guevarra-Laforteza to be that fun and hilarious! After the show, I was really intrigued and excited on how the other female lead, Ms. Rachel Alejandro, will portray the very same character as the The Lady of the Lake as I am quite sure that she will somehow have a different attack on the character! Am really keeping my fingers crossed for me to once again have an opportunity to watch Spamalot, this time with Ms. Alejandro as the female lead.

Directed once again by the talented duo - Mr. Joel Trinidad and Nicky Triviño, Monty Phyton's Spamalot will have a ten-show run on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from April 13 to 22, 2018 at the state-of-the-art Globe Auditorium, Maybank Performing Arts Theater at the BGC Arts Center.

Laughter is still the best medicine. So, what are you waiting for? Reserve a seat now and do not miss on this chance to give yourself the chance to relax, laugh and be healed!

Here is a short video of a scene of The Lady of the Lake:

Ladies and gentlemen, Science Circus has come to town!

PRESS RELEASE

MANILA, Philippines – Be ready to #EnterTheScienceCircus!

Science Circus: Step Right Up! is the 5th traveling exhibition of The Mind Museum,  supported in part by Mastercard, Limkaco Industries, Uratex, and Thompson Hardware and Lighting Center.
The Science Circus: Step Right Up! showcases the amusing, the peculiar, and the extraordinary in our everyday experiences, in the form of interactive exhibits that deceive the senses and boggle the mind.

While the nearly 250-year history of the circus abounds with awe-inspiring demonstrations of physical skill – such as high-flying aerial artists, to death-defying daredevils – the Science Circus challenges our traditional notions of a circus by focusing on the mind’s “acrobatic” perceptual tricks.

As the guests enter the exhibition, they are welcomed by a festive, colorful façade which sets the tone for the sights and sounds they are about to experience. These interactive exhibits are displayed simultaneously in three adjacent Rings. Guests can go in any of the Rings in the order they please.
Ring One, or Deception Perception is a menagerie of exhibits that will prompt you to question whether to see is to believe. Can you always trust your senses? Is what you see as real as it seems? Can your brain produce motion where there is none? Your first venture into the Circus will unveil the “blindness” of your mind’s eye.

Ring Two highlights Pieces of Incredible Engineering, where guests can engage their minds in puzzles and relish how math and art come together. This central area is animated by simple machines, and engages guests in activities that evoke their inner engineer.
Last but not least, Ring Three is Encounters with the Masters, where guests can interact with and learn the secrets of the Masters of Illusion. They can take on the challenges posed by each Master, and discover how our brains can be ensnared by smoke and mirrors.

Visit the Science Circus: Step Right Up! exhibition right now for another wonderful ride through the world of Science! To make it even more enticing, a special treat awaits!
Together with Mastercard, The Mind Museum offers something enticing for visitors! Use your Mastercard and avail of a 3+1 treat to any admission ticket to the Museum or its special exhibitions. See posters for full details. Until December 30, 2016 only.

While Pigeon Brand Ambassador, Shamcey Supsup-Lee, was able to lend a relatable voice for new moms like her going through their own breastfeeding journey.

Shamcey Supsup-Lee is Pigeon's newest Brand Ambassador

“I’ve always known I wanted to breastfeed, because I’ve been told about its many incomparable benefits,” Shamcey shared. “But I didn’t realize until I was actually breastfeeding just how hard it was. There were so many sleepless nights and crying. If I didn’t have my husband’s strong support, I would have quit easily.”

According to Shamcey, eating lots of malunggay, having soup, and power pumping every three hours are some of the things she does to make sure she produces more milk. “I’m just glad that I get help from Pigeon in terms of providing me with what I need when I encounter difficulties,” Shamcey pointed out.

She continued, “The breast pump is great because I can continue to make sure I have enough for Nyke even when I’m not always with her. And my mother-in-law bought me the nipple cream. I recommend for moms to invest in nipple cream. When you’re breastfeeding, it’s really going to hurt so you’ll need all the help you can get,” she advised.

Despite the challenges of breastfeeding, Shamcey managed. “We don’t want our baby to get sick. Nothing can really replace breastmilk. They’ve not been able to make a formula that can mimic what breastmilk can do for the baby,” she concluded.

Abbie encouraged moms further to keep on breastfeeding despite the challenges because there are solutions, “Yes, there are challenges that can be quite daunting, but there are good solutions. And that’s what Pigeon emphasizes,” she said. “For moms who feel like they are not producing enough milk, it’s actually helpful to just keep breastfeeding and pumping. The more milk you express, the more your body will produce. It’s also best to use a breast pump to keep the milk flowing,” Abbie added.

And while moms with new born infants are the main audience of the breastfeeding advocacy and event, Pigeon sees a larger and more inclusive need to drive awareness on its importance. Statistics here in our country show a major lack of support and encouragement for moms to breastfeed. By educating more people about this, Pigeon is aiming to help build a stronger support system – that includes dads, family and friends – for moms who are going through the journey, as well as the infants whose health and well-being are top priority.

We’d like to encourage everyone to be breastfeeding advocates, because our support plays a crucial part in mom and baby’s breastfeeding journey,” Maye concludes.

THE CHILDREN IN REP’S CHILDREN’S THEATER: THEY’VE ONLY JUST BEGUN

It is a rehearsal for HANSEL AND GRETEL at Active Fun in BGC. Six boys and Four girls ages 10-13 are sitting on the floor in one corner of the rehearsal hall watching and waiting to take their turn. They are the stars of the show and they are raring to go.

There are six sets of boys and girls who will play the titular siblings. There has to be given the rigorous schedule of performances ahead of them.  A Repertory Theater for Young Audiences (RTYA) run usually spans five months with over 120 shows sometimes at rate of two to three shows per day. So it is going to be a bumpy ride for these children – most of them fledglings who are performing professionally for the very first time.

But these kids are not just ready and willing to do what needs be done for the love of theater. They are already doing what needs be done.

Many of them shuttle between home and school and rehearsals every day to prove that love.

Take the 12-year old twins Tory and Rayne Cortez who play Hansel and Gretel respectively. They start their days early in the morning, travel from their home in Pasig to Manila Waldorf School in San Mateo, Laguna for classes and then rehearsals at Bonifacio Global City.

And they are not the only ones. Ashlee Factor, one of the Gretels, lives in Binagonan, Rizal and some of the boys who play Hansel also live outside the Greater Manila Area -- Mari Yapjoco is from General Trias City in Cavite, Allen Orolfo from Biñan, Laguna and Joshua Nubla from Caloocan.

Given the crazy Metro Manila traffic, we all know how much time that entails… and how much passion and dedication, discipline and hard work is needed to be willing to do that every single day.

And they come. This is, after all, a dream come true for them.

Most of them want to eventually become professional actors. Some already are.

Though this is his first professional theater gig, 11-year old Joshua Nubla has already appeared in indie films and teleseryes and has a major movie coming up. Ashlee has played a key role in Rep’s SCROOGE, the lead in THE SECRET GARDEN as well one of the dwarves in RTYA’s SNOW WHITE. Ella Gonzalez was also a dwarf in RTYA’s SNOW WHITE while Mari has acted in Resorts World’s Full House Theatre Company productions of SOUTH PACIFIC, NOLI ME TANGERE THE OPERA and THE KING AND I.

Joshua Nubla as Hansel

Newbie or not, all, but one, have been preparing themselves for a life in theatre.

For Joshua, theatre is a move to broaden his horizons and hone his chosen craft. HANSEL AND GRETEL is his on-the-job training, so to speak.

The other nine have been taking workshops with established theater companies for years. Ella Gonzalez, Allen and Nathan Flores trained under Luigi Nacario of Kids Acts Philippines; Mari studied at Nine Works; Andre Ruelo spent 5 summers with TRUMPETS Playshop; Michelle Cornejo, Tory and Rayne started with TRUMPETS then tried out the Rep Summer Workshop; and, Ashlee is also a Rep Summer Workshop graduate.

It is clear that all these children have been bitten by the theatre bug but aim to do more… be more!

Ashlee wants to follow the career path of her inspiration, Lea Salonga, but would rather portray Elphaba in WICKED than Kim.  Tory – who just tagged along because his sister Rayne wanted to take acting lessons – is now hooked himself and wants to play the title role in PIPPIN someday. Rayne would really rather take on the “evil roles since they are so much more interesting,” she says. Meanwhile, she is determined to continue taking acting, singing and dance lessons.

Joshua would like to have a career in both film and theater - one for its popular appeal and the other for the soul. Michelle sees playing the roles of Little Red Riding Hood or the Baker’s Wife or the Witch in INTO THE WOODS, Sandy in GREASE, Miss Hannigan in ANNIE and Eliza Hamilton in HAMILTON in her future.

Mari considers the theater as his home and looks forward to owning the role of the Engineer in MISS SAIGON -- although for now he is content to be Oliver.

Nathan, who started acting when he was 3, loves it because “you get to be someone else.” He wants to be that someone whose name is up in lights on Broadway one day.

Allen, Andre and Ella are aiming for the more adult roles (i.e., the leads) in RTYA’s productions – Aladdin or Peter Pan for Allen, the Tin Man in THE WIZARD OF OZ or the Mad Hatter in ALICE IN WONDERLAND for Andre, and Snow White for Ella. That’s just for starters though. They are hoping these roles will open doors to other roles with other companies in other countries.

All – bar none – dream of becoming professional theatre actors when they grow up!

I remember a different set of children many years ago who had similar dreams. They too showed the same passion and dedication for theatre that these children have. They, too, were disciplined and worked hard.

They were the Wilson children – Trixie, Monique, Gina and Jamie – who started doing ensemble roles from a very early age. There were no workshops then but they learned on-the-job and at the feet of and alongside some of the biggest names in Philippine theatre. They went on to not always bigger but certainly more mature roles in the years that followed.

Monique “graduated” to playing lead roles while still in her tweens and made it all the way to the West End as Kim in MISS SAIGON by the time she was 18. Trixie would be a mainstay in the ensemble while Gina would be a standout in any role assigned to her – big or small – until she was cast in MISS SAIGON Germany. Jamie started at 7 years old as Theo in Rep’s production of PIPPIN and, in his teens, became lead in the Rep productions of BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS and BROADWAY BOUND.

Trixie is now a banker in Connecticut. After MISS SAIGON, Gina married, now lives in Germany and is a mother of 11-year old twins. Monique – after her stint in London, founded the New Voice Company here, taught acting in Singapore and London and is currently Director of One Billion Rising, a worldwide campaign to end violence against women.

It is Jamie who has become totally immersed in theatre. He is not only an actor, but is also an assistant director, a technical director – a veritable general-jack-of-all-trades for some of the biggest theater companies in the Philippines – Actors Actors Inc, World Theatre Project, New Voice Company, Atlantis and, of course, Repertory Philippines.

Though the siblings’ paths have diverged and some now live a life totally removed from theatre, they still profess a love for it and acknowledge how much they have learned and grown from their experiences.

Who knows if the children of HANSEL AND GRETEL get to realize their dream? If Ella will opt to be a doctor or an actress? Or if Nathan will make it all the way to Broadway? Whatever the future holds, one thing is sure -- they will learn valuable life lessons in theatre and from theatre just as the Wilson children did… that passion and dedication, discipline and hard work will take them far no matter what career they eventually choose.

Being a part of HANSEL AND GRETEL has opened a door to endless possibilities for these children. It is a beginning. And what a beginning it is!
